WWWWWEWS is an experimental piece of flash fiction that I initially wrote as part of the Southern Skies Creative Halloween Flash Feature Collab.
We wake. We work. We eat. We sleep.
We wake. We work. We eat. We sleep.
They watch, always.
We can’t see them; they would never be so clumsy. But they are always there.
Wake. Work. Eat. Sleep.
There are no walls, gates or fences. We can leave freely, but all it would achieve is the same drudgery with a different view.
Wake. Work. Eat. Sleep.
Some tried to end things their way, to take control in the only way they could, but they could never get it done in time. Their reward? Sensory dep tanks, while treated to a neural charge every five minutes to keep them fully conscious of their plight. They all returned with the same soulless chasm in their eyes.
Wake. Work. Eat. Sleep.
Of course, we still dream. We hear the tales of those who really did make it out, and built their own world up in the mountains. I think our captors are the ones spreading these stories.
People don’t submit without a promise.
Once, we feared how much things might change.
We never thought about what it would mean if everything stayed the same.
We wake. We work. We eat. We sleep.
